Both central AC and heat pump systems come in a range of efficiency levels. A higher-rated model can cost more upfront, and the payback period depends on how much you’ll actually use the system and your local energy prices.

Compare the full installed cost of each option before assuming a higher efficiency rating is automatically worth the extra money.
